BBC/CGTN book out in paperback

My 2023 book Seeking Truth in International TV News: China, CGTN and the BBC is now available in paperback! Still on the pricey side as paperbacks go, but nothing compared with the atrocity that is academic hardback pricing.

To swoon at the prices, go here. To swoon at the prose, download a sample chapter here (look to the top right-hand corner where it says ‘preview PDF’).

A couple of extracts from reviews of the book, in case you’re still hesitating (and I don’t blame you if you are – no-one is made of money):

“Vivien Marsh’s work… stands out among the very few studies that examine China’s global media by systematically testing the journalistic soundness of this endeavour. Marsh not only provides an insightful analysis of how China’s international news channel CGTN (formerly known as CCTV-News) presents the country to the world, but also scrutinizes Western media’s own shortcomings in living up to their own journalistic principles.” (Pablo Morales, LSE, in Journalism)

“Marsh develops her analysis using a mix of methods, drawing from comparative quantitative analysis of nearly 140 hours of broadcast content and 56 interviews carried out over nine years across four continents. The interviewees include journalists, producers, and reporters from both the BBC and CGTN. Her efforts to engage with Chinese media stakeholders, despite the inherent access challenges, lend added depth and authenticity to her work… At a time when media narratives and political debates are often ensnared in binary or polarised thinking and vestiges of Cold War mentalities, her nuanced analysis emerges as timely and imperative.” (Li Hangwei, Asian Affairs)
