About me

I was a BBC news journalist for almost 30 years. Although I had stints in local, regional and national radio and television (and abroad in Berlin), most of my time was spent in round-the-clock global breaking news programmes. I was part of the team that launched BBC World Service Television News and helped develop it into BBC World News, as producer, programme editor and Newsday strand editor. I edited the World Service radio current affairs programme, Europe Today, and spent much time as a senior journalist in the World Service News team. I also worked for several years as the World Service News London-based Asia-Pacific editor/reporter.

I left the BBC in 2013 and gained my PhD in journalism from the University of Westminster. My research compared the TV news output of CCTV-News (now CGTN English) with BBC World News between 2014 and 2016. I extended this research for the book published in March this year.

As a commentator on anglophone Chinese media, particularly CCTV-News/CGTN, I have been quoted in The Guardian, The Times, Tortoise, The Wire China and Medienwoche and have contributed to the University of Nottingham’s Asia Research Institute blog.
